On Saturday I travelled up state to Greenville to watch the dog race. Freezing it was, but it was a great photo op and everyone-crowds, mushers and dogs- looked like they were having as much fun as I was.

I took this one on a wintry walk round our village with me dad a couple of weeks ago. What I liked here was the sun coming from the right, but the shadows on the fence being the other way round because of the way they affected the drift.

I have to be careful what I write here now ‘cos I don’t want to invite comparisons with Ryan from The (US) Office’s brilliant photoblog that truly skewers photoblog descriptions… Favourite bit yet?

It’s possible my subconscious shot this or perhaps I accidentally took the picture without realizing it. Doesn’t matter. In life, there are no accidents. This is proof. How could something “accidental” be so mysteriously striking. And layered. It’s obviously working on at least three levels, but can you see the fourth and fifth? I dare you to try.

It was coming down thick and fast, the only people out were business owners suddenly demoted to street sweepers and this poor, bedraggled poodle. Atticus was safe and warm back at the house. He’s due a long walk today.

You might have already seen this one on my blog or at Flickr. Sorry to repeat post, but I’m quite proud of it. Mainly for managing to get up early enough to capture it… We’re due for more snow tomorrow and I’ve been reading up on snow photography tips. I think the next one up here might well be Through The Viewfinder.

This one is from Astoria, Oregon last week on a cold, rainy day. I was risking my camera just taking it out in the elements, but I’m happy with how this one turned out. Thanks should go to the Oregon Tourist Association for placing this info board in just the right place.

We had another flurry of snow last night, about half an inch, but by the morning it was gone. While it fell I took this long exposure shot with a flash so you get the trails of the snow with some flakes ‘frozen’ by the flash.

After the snow comes rain. After the rain comes snow.

We got back last night from our Christmas break in Los Angeles and I expected at least some snow to be left, but alas, tis all gone. I feel like I carpe’d the snowy diem though. I didn’t do much shooting in Los Angeles (there’s only so many angles you can take of Old Navy, Sears, Mervyns, Macy’s, Best Buy…) but shall be out and about in the next day or two to see how this mini ice age has affected the Oregonian landscape.

Sorry for the pause in posting too, especially after all the new sign ups. I didn’t want to broadcast to the world that the house would be empty so I just slipped away… I’ll be answering emails and getting your pictures printed and sent very soon. Thank you for your patience, and happy 2009, yo.

Who knew that you can press your face into fresh powder snow on a car and you get an insanely detailed imprint. I couldn’t bring myself to do this to the dog so I tried it myself.

If we weren’t heading off out so soon I’d try for a fuller recreation of Han Solo Frozen in Carbonite…

Not much in the way of technique here except try to keep the camera dry, try to stay warm, and try to keep moving… We’re at well over 2 feet of snow today, it’s still snowing… I made an igloo. Details, pics and details on where to find the video of it over at me blog…
